Serving On The Michigan International Camporee 2008 Staff
The Michigan International Camporee Steering Committee invites Scouts,
Venturers, and leaders from all around the world who will be 18 or older on
August 1, 2008, to join us as part of the 2008 Michigan International Camporee
staff. The MIC 2008 Staff Application lists the wide variety of staff
positions that are available. Serving on a Michigan International Camporee
staff is a unique opportunity to meet Scouts and adults from over 20 countries
and to help them experience the friendship and fellowship of international
Scouting.
The MIC 2008 staff will be composed entirely of volunteers who are registered
members of their national Scout associations. Each MIC staff member must
pay a U.S. $100 staff fee to cover the cost of staff meals and camporee items.
Any MIC staff member who would like to be housed in a Northwoods cabin with bunk
and mattress will be given a space in one of the cabins. Those who prefer
to bring their own camper/trailer or tent can do that. MIC staff members
will eat their meals in the camp dining hall.
To apply for a position on the MIC 2008 staff, complete the
Michigan International Camporee Staff Application
electronically and submit it. Electronic submission is necessary to get
your information into our staff database. Also print and sign a copy of
your application and mail it with a U.S. $100 check made out to CHIEF OKEMOS
COUNCIL BSA to Michigan
International Camporee 2008, PO Box 244, ST JOHNS MI 48879, USA.
Applicants from other countries who have difficulty submitting payment in U.S. $
should contact us by email for other options. In accordance with Youth
Protection, the council office of each U.S. staff applicant and the
International Commissioner of each international staff applicant will be
contacted to verify the applicant’s qualifications.
Staff applications will be considered until all staff positions are filled.
The $100 fee will be refunded to anyone not selected to be on the MIC staff.
Michigan International Camporee Staff Guidelines
- All adults involved in Michigan International Camporees serve in staff
positions. There are no adult "participants." All staff members
have specific staff responsibilities that they are expected to fulfill.
There will be some free time scheduled for every staff member. However,
staff responsibilities will sometimes prevent staff members from being at
camporee events and activities they would like to attend.
- Michigan International Camporee program activities are for participants.
There will be very few opportunities for staff members to participate in
camporee program activities.
- All Michigan International Camporee staff members are expected to have the
willingness and ability to adapt to changing and unexpected situations and to
work with participants whose primary language is not English.
- All Michigan International Camporee staff members must wear their Scout
uniforms morning, noon, and evening, on duty and off duty. For U.S.
staff members, this may be either the Class A uniform with official Scout
shirt and shorts or the Class B uniform with a Michigan International Camporee
T shirt or polo shirt and official Scout shorts. The only exceptions are
swimwear at the waterfront and work clothes worn by the ranger’s crew.
Staff members from other countries will wear the uniforms of their Scout
Associations with similar T shirt options.
- All Michigan International Camporee staff positions are non-smoking
positions. We fully support the BSA position that "Adult leaders should
support the attitude that young adults are better off without tobacco and may
not allow the use of tobacco products at any BSA activity involving youth
participants." There are no smoking areas at Northwoods. Anyone
planning to serve on the Michigan International Camporee staff agrees to be a
non-smoker for that week.
- All Michigan International Camporee staff members will be aware of the
rules and laws established for this event by the BSA, the state of Michigan,
the Chief Okemos Council, and the Michigan International Camporee, will follow
those rules and laws, and, in all their dealings with troop leaders and youth
participants, both US and international, will support and help enforce those
rules and laws.
- All Michigan International Camporee curfews and quiet time rules apply to
staff members as well as participants. Except when on duty, staff
members must be in their campsite or cabin area during all times that camporee
participants are required to be in their campsites.
- While a 16-17 age category is included in the Michigan International
Camporee Staff Application, there are very few staff positions open to 16 and
17 year olds. All program staff must be at least 18 years old except
16-17 year old members of the Northwoods summer camp staff who have special
shooting sports or waterfront skills. 16 and 17 year olds are encouraged
to be camporee participants.
- The April 2008 orientation and site inspection weekend at Northwoods is
required for all staff members who live in Michigan. It is not required
for out-of-state and international staff members, but staff members from
nearby states are encouraged to participate.
- We welcome staff (international service team) applications from other
countries. International staff members are an important part of a
Michigan International Camporee. We do, however, require that each staff
member from outside the US be a registered member of a WOSM-affiliated Scout
Association and either receive approval from his/her country’s WOSM
International Commissioner to serve on our camporee staff or come as part of a
contingent that have been approved by a WOSM International Commissioner.
We also require that all international staff members be fluent in English.
- All MIC staff members must have completed BSA Youth Protection Training
between August, 2006, and the date of the camporee. BSA Youth Protection
Training is available online at
http://olc.scouting.org. In addition to Youth Protection Training,
Venturing Youth Protection Training is important for MIC staff members because
it covers working with coed groups. Venturing Youth Protection Training
will be conducted as a group at the April, 2008, staff weekend at Northwoods
and can be viewed online.
- HEALTH HISTORY AND PHYSICAL EXAMINATION FORMS - BSA requires Health
History and Physical Examination forms for all youth and adults who
participate in a week-long camp. This includes MIC 2008 staff members. There
are two Chief Okemos Council forms, the
Adult Health and Medical Record
Form and the Youth Health and Medical
Record Form. Anyone who will be under 40 at the time of the camporee must
have had a physical examination, with a doctor’s signature, within 3 years of
the event. Anyone who will be 40 or older at the time of the camporee must
have had a physical examination, with a doctor’s signature, within 1 year of
the event.
The first two pages of the Chief Okemos Council forms are identical to the
BSA PERSONAL HEALTH
AND MEDICAL RECORD CLASS I AND CLASS II. That form and BSA Health and
Medical Record Forms used for other camps and activities that have the same
information as the first two pages are acceptable. If different BSA forms are
used, staff members 18 and older also need to complete page 3, “ADULT
VOLUNTEER FORM,” on the Chief Okemos
Adult Health and Medical Record
Form and parents of staff members under 18 also need to complete page 3,
“Camper Release Form” on the Chief Okemos Youth Health and Medical Record
Form.
Photocopies of these forms are acceptable. In order to enable our Health
and Safety staff to prescreen MIC participants and make the MIC 2008 check-in
day run more smoothly, your unit’s completed Health and Medical Record Forms
should either be brought to the April 25-27 MIC 2008 Planning Weekend at
Northwoods or mailed to MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL CAMPOREE 2008, PO BOX 244, ST
JOHNS MI 48879 by May 1.
- MEDIA RELEASE FORMS - We need permission for Scouts and adults who
participate in MIC 2008 to appear in photos, videos, etc., of the event. Staff
members who are 18 or older should fill out the
Adult Media
Release Form. For staff members who are under 18, parental permission is
needed and you should use an Individual
Scout/Venturer Media Release Form. Please submit your media release form
with your Health and Medical Record Form.
