IMPORTANT NOTICE - ALL SPACES FOR OUT-OF-STATE PATROLS ARE NOW FILLED
There will be a very limited number of spaces at the 2008 Michigan International Camporee for contingents of U.S. Scouts and/or Venturers from troops and crews that are located too far away from Michigan’s Lower Peninsula to be host units. This option is not available to troops and crews located in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Each non-host-unit contingent will consist of 8 Boy Scouts and/or Venturers and 2 adult leaders. Coed contingents must have one male and one female adult leader. Out-of-state contingents must bring their own tents and personal camping equipment. Additional adults traveling with a contingent can apply to be members of our camporee staff. All BSA contingents participating in the Michigan International Camporee must travel with approved BSA tour permits.
Each non-host-unit contingent will be placed in a campsite with 16 Scouts/Venturers and 2-4 adult leaders from the hosting troop(s) or crew(s) and with an international group of 16 Scouts and 4 adult leaders from outside of the U.S. and Canada, either one large contingent or several small contingents. This will result in a total of 40 youth and 8-10 adult leaders in each campsite. The campsite adult leaders will form the 40 youth participants into 4 mixed patrols of 10 members each for the week’s activities, so it is likely that 4 buddy pairs from the contingent from outside of Michigan will be placed in 4 different campsite patrols. One of the campsite adult leaders from Michigan will serve as the campsite Scoutmaster. The other 7-9 adult leaders in the campsite will serve as campsite assistant Scoutmasters.
Out-of-state contingents are welcome to arrive at Northwoods on Saturday evening, July 26, to set up and get ready for the camporee. However, food service from the commissary will begin with the evening meal on Sunday, July 27, and will end with breakfast on Sunday, August 3. Contingents arriving early are responsible for providing their own meals until the evening meal on July 27.
The nearest airport to Northwoods is Flint, but Lansing and Detroit airports can also be used. Amtrak has daily train service between Chicago and Flint.
If your troop or crew would like to form a contingent of 8 Scouts/Venturers
and 2 adults to participate in the 2008 Michigan International Camporee, your
first step is to fill out the
Out-Of-State Unit Application Form electronically and submit it as an email
attachment to
registration@micamporee.org. Applications for
out-of-state and Canadian patrols from troops and crews that participated in the
2004 Michigan International Camporee will have priority for a space at the 2008
Michigan International Camporee if received before June 1, 2007. All
applications received by June 1, 2007, for out-of-state and Canadian patrols
from troops and crews that did not participate in the 2004 Michigan
International Camporee will be considered as a group. In considering those
applications, our first priority will be to enable our international guests to
meet Scouts and Venturers from as many different parts of the U.S. and Canada as
possible by accepting one contingent from each state and province represented in
the applications. We will then fill the rest of the out-of-state/Canada
spaces. If there are spaces left after June 1, 2007, they will be filled on a
first come first served basis.
After approving your application form, we will reply confirming that there is a
space available for your contingent and that we will hold that space for one
month while you complete the next step of the registration process. Your next
step is to print a copy of your
Out-Of-State Unit Application Form, have it
signed by your unit leader and unit committee chair, have it endorsed where
indicated by your District Executive/District Director or other member of your
council professional staff with their statement that your Scouts/Venturers and
leaders will be good representatives of your council and American Scouting, and
mail that form together with a deposit of $25 per youth participant for a total
of $200 (check made out to CHIEF OKEMOS COUNCIL BSA) to Michigan International Camporee 2008, PO Box 244, ST JOHNS MI 48879.
For us to continue to hold your unit’s space, we must receive your form and
deposit within one month after you receive our confirmation message. Our MIC
2008 staff advisor will then contact your council staff to confirm their
endorsement of your unit’s participation in MIC 2008 and your reservation will
be complete. Deposits are not refundable and are transferable only to a unit
that replaces your unit as an out-of-state or Canadian contingent.
